First Week of February

Is it spring yet?

February started off with a bang – or perhaps I should say blizzard. This was Wednesday, Feb 02.

The cat door was buried, though this time it was only a drift so it was not too hard to clear a path. A couple of winters ago I had to dig a tunnel.

Since all the storms started in January, the cats haven’t weren’t going out at all. Frank finally gave in and he’s been making short visits to the yard. He doesn’t stay out long though.

Zappa mostly stays in; he is a fan of warm rooms and comfortable furniture.

It's a hard knock life

January

It’s been a stormy month – right from the beginning of the month, as I see when I look back through my photos.

This was January 3, our last day off before returning to work after the holidays.

I took advantage of that last day of vacation to try out my new pancake pan.

Pretty cool, huh?

Then January 12:

January 21 – This is how we work from home; I sit in the living room surrounded by cats. Zappa on my lap, of course.

There was a lot of clutter in the living room that day, since the night before we had gone out so Cory could by the Rock Band 3 game, and at Costco we found an ottoman that is also storage for all the Rock Band devices.

Rock Band 3 also has a keyboard.

January 27:

Yep. It’s that time of the year where you wonder if it’s ever going to stop snowing.

Candace & Cory’s 2010 Gewurztraminer

Back in November, after talking about it for quite a while, Cory & I stopped in at Barley Malt & Vine to check things out. We ended up purchasing a wine kit. For a fee, they make the wine on the premises and when it’s ready you go in and bottle it. We made an appointment when we bought the kit and today was the day!

They have quite a nice little set up and I thought my parents would be interested in seeing it, so I pulled out my iPhone.

This was our first time, so we purchased bottles (we chose blue 750 ml), along with labels, synthetic corks and foils for the tops of the bottles. The process was quite simple.

First, disinfect and rinse the bottles.

Then fill two at a time.

It’s pretty easy – you basically push buttons. You push the start button, which is timed. If the bottle was getting full and you could see there was still time left, you’d push stop. That didn’t happen for us – mostly we’d push start and when it turned off we’d hit the manual button to get to the correct level.

Then we corked the bottles.

And applied labels.

You can design and print your own labels, or choose from stock labels. We found a Gewurztraminer label that we liked, so we went with that.

After labels, the foils went on.

The time flew by and we were finished in an hour which was less time than we expected. And now we have 30 bottles of wine in our basement. It was kind of fun, actually, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we do it again.

Just Like That – It’s Winter

Our first real snow fall happened this weekend. At this point, it’s new enough to just look pretty.  🙂

After the record amounts of rainfall we had early in November, we had a stretch of beautiful weather. On the weekend of the 13 & 14 I finally finished tidying away the garden for the season. It was warm and sunny – a fantastic weekend to putter around in the yard.

Garden Put to Bed

Containers to be put away

Catnip - still going strong!

omehow, putting everything away in the fall is not as much fun as dragging it all out in the spring. I think it’s actually less work, but it seems like more.

I was impressed to see that catnip plant still going strong and thought to myself that I should cut some to dry. Unfortunately it didn’t happen. The weather did start to cool off the next week, and somehow I never got back out there. I think we were all settling firmly into winter mode.

Frank snoozing on his love seat

Zappa on my lap - happens every time I sit down now

Then yesterday it happened.

Of course, at this point, it could still melt and disappear completely. We won’t cry if it does. But it’s starting to look a lot like winter…

So what do you do on a snowy weekend? Fire up the crock pot!

I still had a few potatoes & carrots left from the garden. I did an inventory of the kitchen, picked up a few extras from the grocery store yesterday, and today we have been enjoying the aroma of Italian Chicken Soup (so named because it smells like Mom’s Italian Chicken).

And what could go better with Italian Chicken soup than fresh baked whole wheat bread?

The bread is out of the oven now, and the soup should be ready by now too. Time to eat!

Rain & Thai Food

It has been raining since Friday. Record amounts of precipitation even. No sign of it letting up for the next couple of days. I find it really saps my energy. Blah.

Yesterday we went out in the afternoon because Cory needed to shop for jeans & t-shirts. Then we hit up Costco. By the time we got home neither one of us felt like doing much in the way of cooking, so we ended up just having a salad and heating up some flautas that we got at Costco.

So today I thought we would have the chicken and tofu stir fry that I had planned for yesterday. I was thinking just a quick stir fry with rice, but Cory was in the mood to experiment.

We ended up with a Thai feast.

Green Curry with Chicken.

Green is my favorite of the Thai Curries (Matsaman being a close second). This was different that our usual Green Curry, but very tasty and the chicken was cooked perfectly.

Tofu and Mushrooms.

Except I didn’t eat the mushrooms because mushrooms are yucky. Unfortunately, I can’t seem to convince Cory of that fact. The tofu was excellent though. Lately Costco has had 3-packs of tofu for $0.97 which is fantastic if you like tofu. We do!

Broccoli with Oyster Sauce.

Very simple stir fry dish, but flavorful.

I polished off the broccoli, but I will be having leftover Curry Chicken & Tofu for lunch tomorrow.

I know. Poor me.  🙂

Dinner took a little longer than expected, but Cory & I have fun playing in the kitchen and the results were excellent. And really, considering the fact that we made 3 dishes (plus rice), the cooking time was not that long. It was the time spent choosing the recipes and getting organized that made it seem longer. Oh, and the cleaning up.

Not something I would want to do every week night, but it was a good way to liven up a rainy evening.

First Snow Sighting

Yesterday was actually a pretty nice day in these parts. I was out grocery shopping wearing a t-shirt and sweater and felt completely comfortable. Last night we attended a small party at a friend’s place, and it was after midnight by the time we got home. By the time I got to bed it was 1 AM and I was tired. So how interested do you think I was when Cory woke me up this morning to tell me that it was snowing?

Not at all interested would be the correct answer. Especially since it was barely enough snow to take notice of. There was a light frosting of white on trees, fence posts and deck railings, but that was it and it didn’t last long.

It was a noticeable temperature difference though, and I was glad I had the wood stove all ready to go. Our first fire of the season took the chill off so we have not yet had to turn on the electric heat.

I took Frank out for a short walk this afternoon to chew on some grass and check out the perimeter of the fence – he does like to do that now and again.

But chilly weather is much more suited to indoor pursuits.

Once the fire got going, Zappa hid out in the basement. He loves basking in the heat from the wood stove.

Plenty more of that to come though. Hoping for a bit more of the warmer weather before the cold sets in.

Last Hurrah?

I confess that I did not make it out to the garden at all this past weekend, which is a shame because the weather was decent. But it didn’t happen. I will need to get out finish tidying things away soon though.

Weekend of Oct 16 & 17

The middle weekend of October was rainy and damp, for the most part, so I didn’t get outside much on that weekend either. The weather was warm though, and by late Sunday afternoon the sun was out.

I pulled a bit of a fast one on the cats – I gave them their evening meal of wet food & plain yogurt, then shut the window to the cat door while they were distracted. This allowed me to have the gate open and start carting some things out of the yard without worrying about the cats taking off. Time to start bringing in tomato cages, bamboo plant stakes, and my pretty table.

While I was out in the yard, I discovered that one of my tomato plants had not given up.

I also found a lone green bean.

I munched on that guy, along with the tomatoes. To the gardener goes the spoils.

That weekend I also used the last of my tomatoes for one more batch of salsa. The tomatoes weren’t going to keep and I still had those habaneros sitting around.

Small but mighty – only three jars, but this stuff is hot!

Weekend of October 23 & 24

The  next week Cory came down with a cold. But that didn’t stop him from going computer gaming with the guys for Saturday afternoon/evening. I took advantage of the car being out of the garage to do a bit of cleaning up out there. Which is not very exciting or photogenic.

I also decided it was time to play with the dough hook on my Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer.

I made French Bread and pizza dough. For the French Bread, I used a recipe from the instruction book that came with the mixer. For the pizza dough, I used our old family recipe (the one we made every Sunday for so many years), but followed the method given for a recipe in the mixer book. They both came together really fast.

I need to work on my loaf forming skills, but it smelled like French Bread! It tastes pretty good too, though I don’t think it was quite as fluffy as it should be. That could be due to the fact that I used Nutri-flour blend (white whole wheat flour) instead of white flour. I’ll have to experiment a bit more I guess. But it was a productive afternoon.

By Sunday, I was feeling like I was coming down with Cory’s cold, so I didn’t do much. Did a bit more cleaning up in the basement – soon it will be time to start using the wood stove and we’ve still got lots of boxes that haven’t been dealt with since we started cleaning out the storage closet at the end of May. I managed to clear a path to the stove on Sunday.

This week I’ve been kind of tired, fighting off this cold, but I think I’m on the mend. Looking forward to the weekend! Hopefully we’ll both be feeling good by then.

October

Hello Autumn! Time is flying by, as usual, and here it is mid-October already (or close enough anyway). The weather has been beautiful though and we had a really nice Thanksgiving Weekend. Always nice to have an extra day off and have the sun shining!

Sunday I made a big batch of salsa in my new giant pot. Six pounds of tomatoes…

This was a combination of tomatoes from our garden and from the farmer’s market. I had a big container of Habanero peppers that we’d bought at Stirlings the weekend that Mom was visiting (also when I bought the giant green pot!) and I figured I’d need a lot of tomatoes. I still didn’t use all of the habaneros, but it all made a decent amount of salsa.

I wore gloves to chop the tomatoes and the habaneros, as I always do. I chopped those red banana peppers without gloves though, because they were labeled Sweet Banana Peppers when I bought them, but I think they had some zing to them. I also think there may have been a hole in one of my gloves when I was chopping the habaneros. Both of my hands were stinging when I was finished all the chopping, but my left thumb was burning and painful. We haven’t tried this salsa yet, but it may turn out to be extra hot.

Sunday I was out in the garden for a bit. I decided it was time to pull the rest of the carrots. Mom and I had picked pretty much all of the tomatoes the weekend before, and most of the plants are pretty much done. The grape and cherry tomatoes haven’t quite given up yet though.

I also found some green onions and bunching onions that I’d forgotten about.

And I picked a cabbage. I planted cabbages & lettuce in the spring, but the slugs were so bad that we didn’t get much lettuce and I didn’t think I was going to get any cabbage. But the slugs died off and the cabbage tried to rally.

This one looks sort of like it is supposed to – the variety is called Caraflex and it grows in an oval sort of shape, which I thought would be a good choice for a small garden.

I figured I might as well pick this one and try it out.

I picked the center part with the least raggedy leaves.

Meanwhile, the cats were hanging out. Zappa was watching for things to chase, and Frank was sticking close to the gate, hoping to make a getaway.

I started collecting my tomato cages and other supports.

Zappa came to check things out…

…and Frank maintained his guard of the gate.

I don’t know if you can see this at all, but there was a bird that kept coming to the sunflowers. It was hard to see, the wind was blowing and the bird kept moving, but I pointed the camera and hoped for the best. You may have to click on the photos to enlarge, but the bird is on the back of the plant.

Anyway, it’s getting late and I want to try and get in a bit of piano practice before bed. I finished of Scarborough Fair last week, which I will miss playing because it does sound so pretty! But I started a new song which is fun and familiar.

A simplified, shorter version of course, though it is still a challenging one. I’ll have fun with it though!

Last Weekend Of September…

Now that it is almost the first weekend of October…Ahem!

Last Saturday was really busy, so I didn’t get out to the garden at all, but I had it in the back of my mind that it was time to dig up the rest of the potatoes. So my agenda for Sunday was all set.

The second potato tub was not looking too good by this point…Those plants were done.

While I was at it, I picked a lot of the tomatoes that were left, along with some peppers and onions. Never sure what’s going to happen with the weather this time of year – they’ve threatened frost a couple of times already, though it hasn’t happened yet.

The cats were hanging out with me, of course.

When I was finished in the yard, I picked the rest of the tomatoes from the container on the deck. Those plants are looking pretty much done too. And a few more peppers and an onion that was growing in a pot.

Those two little plants gave me a whole lot of tomatoes. Small tomatoes, but nice ones.

Sunday afternoon, my kitchen table was looking like this:

What’s a girl to do? Make Salsa!

The weather actually stayed really warm this week, though we haven’t had much sun. But hopefully I’ll still have a few more tomatoes to pick, and there are still carrots out there too.

Two Weekends ago…

I’m two weeks behind here. I keep taking pictures, intending to post, but it just doesn’t happen. So, to catch up…

Two Fridays ago, Cory decided to roast our pork tenderloin in the oven because it was too cold to go out and barbecue. Oddly enough, it was not too cold to send me out to the garden for carrots…

It actually was not bad out at all, and while I was in the garden I picked a bunch of tomatoes as well.

I stopped on the deck and filled my bucket to the brim with tomatoes from the deck planter.

Then went inside and had fun making pretty salads. After running back outside to pick parsley and green onions to add to the salads.

While I fussed with my salads, Cory was frying up potatoes carrots and bell peppers. I had some raw carrots on the side instead of cooked ones.

Saturday was busy, but Sunday I did head out to the garden again. When I went out side, I was greeted by a neighbor.

I picked more tomatoes and enjoyed my flowers.

Frank and I had a little walk.

Then I went inside and made peach freezer jam (not sure it turned out right) and salsa.

Tomatoes have pretty much been a theme (not that I mind). Friday we had the salads (with carrots & potatoes). On Saturday we tried out a Japanese curry recipe which used up the last of our potatoes, plus some tomatoes and carrots. The curry fed us for three days.

On Tuesday we had pasta with chicken and tomatoes.

On Wednesday, I tried out a new recipe. With more tomatoes.

Cory liked it so much that we had it again on Thursday.

Which brings us to the end of week one. This weekends pictures coming soon.
